International Names

 Atefeh (Ati) Razmjoo

                                                     International Names

My name is Atefeh, which it means kindness and it is Arabic. I have
different feelings about my name. My name is my favorite because it has a good meaning and it
makes me feel good about it. Although it is difficult to pronounce in the other languages, in my
language, Farsi, it is not. On the other hand, I do not like my name because in my opinion there are a
lot of nice names that have nice meaning and have long history.
My uncle had a daughter whose name was also Atefeh. When she died, my
parents decided to give her name to me!! The interesting point is when my uncle had a girl again,
he did not choose that name, but my parents did. If I had a choice in my country, Iran, I would
change my name to an ancient Persian name or to an international name. Ancient Persian names
have long history and beautiful meanings.
There are some favorite names that I would like to have. Anahita and Hannah which are my
favorite names. The first one is very old Persian name and the name of “Water God”. In. my
point of view, is easy to pronounce and has an easy nickname, Anna. The other name is
Hannah that it is used in Iran too.
To conclude, I think parents should be careful when they intend to give a name to their
kids and should not give a name on their kids just because it is from their grandmother,
grandfather, or someone who died. In addition, in countries like Iran that do not have a
democratic government, it is pretty pretty difficult to change a name.

  1. After reading your post, I knew it is hard to change a name in your country. I think it is not that easy in China as well. I mean it needs some documents to go different departments to approve. It cost us a couple weeks, and makes us difficult. Moreover, I agree with your opinion that choose a same name with dead people. Probably it will hurt children someday.

  2. I think it is hard to change name in any countries. Beside you need to prepare all the documents and wait for a little bit long time to finish all the procedures, your family and friends may not able to remember your new name quickly. In Chinese culture, some of the people want to change their name because of they want another lucky name, but who know it can helps or not, right?

  3. i think it is difficult to change name a long time ago. even though i did not my name, my father changed my brother's name when he was child.my father told me that he needed to prepare many documents to change his name. next, i think your parents have a traditional concept. they used the name of the deceased to remember these deceased people. however, this may not be good because when the child knows, the child will be frustrated with self-esteem.

    1. Thank you for your comments Wanling. I think you’re right because when I think about it, I see that it must be difficult for my family and friends to call me in another name. Also, for myself. My family and my friends like my name and they believe that we know you with your name.
